(AP) ? As Syrian forces struggled to drive rebels from the country's largest city, the regime's key ally Iran tried Thursday to start an alternative political process to address the crisis.

Iran gathered an array of nations ranging from strong supporters of Damascus to far-flung nations a world away from the Syrian civil war.

The one-day forum is unlikely to result in any international consensus, but it shows Iran's resolve to stand by President Bashar Assad as his forces try to crush the 17-month-old uprising.

On Thursday, Syrian rebels said they were low on ammunition but still managed to put up resistance against a regime ground offensive in the city of Aleppo, a center of fighting for more than two weeks.

Tehran billed Thursday's conference as a way to focus on dialogue ? an alternative to Western-led initiatives that call for Assad to give up power.

Iran has said in the past that the Syrian regime's critics fail to take into account violence by the rebels.

"Iran is against the killing of unarmed people and citizens by any side," Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said at the gathering.

He also warned that sending weapons to the opposition will only fuel the crisis, and he accused rebels of using civilians as "human shields."

Syrian rebels last week intercepted a bus carrying 48 Iranians in a Damascus suburb and seized them. Rebels claimed the men are military personnel, including some members of Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard, who were on a "reconnaissance mission" to help Assad's crackdown.

Iran, however, says the 48 were pilgrims visiting a Shiite shrine in Damascus. Salehi said Wednesday that some of the pilgrims are retired members of the army and Revolutionary Guard.

The overwhelmingly Sunni Muslim rebels have also seized 11 Lebanese Shiite pilgrims who have been held in northern Syria since May.

Salehi said some 30 countries attended the meeting, including Russia and China, as well as far-off Benin, Cuba and Mauritania. The meeting was called at short notice, and most countries were represented at the ambassador level.

Russia in the past has urged the West to allow Tehran to take part in international discussions on how to settle the Syrian crisis, arguing that the Islamic republic could play an important role. Moscow has been the main protector and ally of Assad's regime, shielding it from U.N. sanctions over its brutal crackdown on an uprising that has evolved into a full-blown civil war.

The U.S. dismissed the Iranian gathering.

"We think the Iranian behavior in Syria is destructive," State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell said. "It's just hard for us to imagine that after putting so much effort into keeping Assad in power ... how they can be a constructive actor in facilitating a political solution to the crisis."

On Thursday, government troops and rebels clashed in opposition bastions of Aleppo, a city of 3 million people.

The state news agency claimed Wednesday that Assad's force had regained control of the Salaheddine neighborhood, the main rebel area in Aleppo. But activists said rebels were still putting up a fight there on Thursday.

"The battle is still going on in the streets of Salaheddine and in other neighborhoods in Allepo," rebel spokesman Abdel Azziz Salameh told The Associated Press. "Our fighters have a shortage of ammunition but they have not withdrawn."

The regime has been trying to drive rebels out of Aleppo for two weeks. But the blistering attacks on rebel positions from the ground and the air appear to be only slowly chipping away at the opposition's grip on its strongholds.

Aleppo-based activist Mohammad Saeed said troops were using warplanes and tanks to shell the towns of Hreitan and Tel Rifat north of Aleppo, from where most of the rebels converged on the city.

"They are trying to cut the main lines from Tel Rifat to Aleppo," Saeed said.

Aleppo holds great symbolic and strategic importance. Some 25 miles (40 kilometers) from the Turkish border, it has been a pillar of regime support during the uprising. An opposition victory there would allow easier access for weapons and fighters from Turkey, where many rebels are based.

Syria's close ties to Iran and the Islamic militant group Hezbollah in Lebanon mean that the conflict has the potential to draw in the country's neighbors.

On Thursday, Lebanese officials arrested Michel Samaha, a former Lebanese minister and parliament member, who is one of the most ardent Lebanese supporters of the Syrian regime.

Samaha often appeared on local TV stations as an analyst and spoke out in favor of the regime. His wife, Gladys, told local media that security agents kicked in the front door early Thursday and pulled Samaha from his bed. She called his arrest a purely political detention because of his political position.

But Lebanese officials said only that he was arrested for "security" reasons. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not allowed to speak to the media.

Also Thursday, Assad appointed a new prime minister to replace the one who defected to neighboring Jordan this week. State-run news agency SANA said he appointed Health Minister Wael Nader al-Halqi, a Sunni member of the ruling Baath party from the southern province of Daraa, the birthplace of the revolt.

Al-Halqi replaces Riad Hijab, whose defection was a humiliating blow to the regime. Like nearly all prominent defectors so far, Hijab is a member of Syria's majority Sunnis ? the Muslim sect which forms the bedrock of the uprising.

Still, power remains closely held within Assad's inner circle and the most significant leadership is dominated by members of the ruling elite's minority Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

A source said: ?Brad flew in to oversee preparations but they?re all here now. They say it?s for Jane and Bill, but some think this could be it. Even Angelina?s private jeweler is here.?

[Presentation] Engaging Local Airport Communities and Achieving ...

by Elizabeth Cecconi | August 8th, 2012

?

Even before social media became top of mind, airports had long been working to engage their communities. Now, be it through fun local promotions, unique community partnerships and co-branded events or business and community engagement through local business leads, the opportunities for airport community engagement are growing with the onset of social platforms and tools.

This past Saturday I had the pleasure of being invited up to Appleton, Wisconsin to speak at the Great Lakes Chapter of the American Association of Airport Executive?s Annual Conference.? I was asked to speak on the topic of Community Engagement in Airports. What a fun and interactive session it turned out to be!

The session focused on identifying four objectives or segments for community engagement: Business Travel community, Community Leaders, Leisure Travelers and Route Development efforts.? By talking through each of these sections, we determined ways to engage local communities by discussing fun interactive campaigns and identifying ways to reach each of these target groups. While it was not solely a social focused presentation, the group also was delighted to learn that,?with the introduction of social media, there are ?now even more ways to take airport community engagement to the next level.

I?m sharing the presentation below so that you too can take a look at the various community engagement efforts by airports. (Click here if you can not view the Prezi below)

Wednesday Olympic Photo Gallery: Volleyball, discus, track and field

Here are five things to look out for at the London Olympics on Wednesday:

1. GOLD FOR CERTAIN: The Americans are guaranteed first place in women?s beach volleyball, with Walsh Jennings and Misty May-Treanor playing compatriots April Ross and Jennifer Kessy.

2. LONG JUMP: American Brittney Reese is a strong gold medal chance.

3. TABLE TENNIS: China is on the brink of another gold in the men?s team table tennis, where they?ve won every gold on offer so far.

4. 200-METER FINAL: In an evening race, Jamaica?s Veronica Campbell-Brown will attempt to become the first woman to win the same track and field event at three consecutive Olympics.

5. USAIN BOLT: The fastest man in the Olympics runs in the semifinal of the men?s 200 meters, an event he won in Beijing.

?

A bet is a bet, and Australian sports minister Kate Lundy won?t row back on her wager.

Lundy will put on a Great Britain team shirt ? the height of embarrassment for a citizen of the U.K.?s fiercely competitive former colony ? and row the Olympic course at Eton Dorney, west of London.

The bet was with British sports minister Hugh Robertson over which nation would claim the most Olympic medals in London.

British athletes have already powered to 48 medals, including 22 golds, while Australia ? which retains Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state ? is lagging behind with 25 medals and just 4 golds.

?I have cheerfully conceded,? Lundy said Wednesday as an national inquest began at home over why the sports-crazed nation has stumbled so badly. At Beijing in 2008, Australia claimed 46 medals.

?

Olympic athletes are getting used to the idea of life after the games.

?Right, time to sort out home insurance and my many emails? backtoreality? tweeted track cyclist Geraint Thomas who won gold for Britain in the men?s team pursuit.

British Boxer Zoe Smith tweeted, ?Right. Well then. After the non-stop madness of the last week and few days, I think it is high time I sorted my life out.?

U.S. shooter Jamie Gray posted a photo of her kit all over the floor of her Alabama home, saying that a ?clothing bomb went off unpacking from London2012.?

?

Make way for the daredevils.

The BMX competition begins on Wednesday, with cyclists hitting jumps at break-neck speeds in pursuit of gold.

British star Shanaze Reade knows how difficult that can be. The two-time defending world champion crashed on the final curve in Beijing.

Now she?s back for another shot.

?It was the best thing that happened to me in Beijing to not win that Olympics because it gave me the rules of how to be an Olympic champion,? she says.

Some BMX factoids:

  • Bicycle moto cross ? or BMX ? started in California in the late 1960s
  • The International BMX Federation was founded in 1981
  • BMX is the newest cycling discipline in the Olympics. It first appeared on the program at the Beijing games in 2008
  • BMX races take place outdoors and include jumps and tight corners
  • In a typical race, eight riders compete in heats. The top four then qualify for the next round

Discus gold medalist Robert Harting of Germany put on a show Tuesday night.

Harting ripped his shirt to shreds following his win ? much like the Incredible Hulk ? flexed his muscles and then took to the track to make a pass on the women?s 100-meter hurdles.

?If you see me coming out of the stadium without a shirt, you know it was good,? Harting said.

A tsunami of indignation and humor is swamping Irish Twitter.

Why? Because a London newspaper ? The Daily Telegraph ? asked its readers: ?Can anyone beat Britain?s Katie Taylor??

Taylor is Irish, not British, thank you.

Taylor, the world?s reigning lightweight champion boxer, won easily to advance to Thursday?s final as overwhelming favorite to win the gold. Her performances have riveted Ireland.

?Dear Daily Telegraph. Katie Taylor is IRISH. However, please feel free to claim Ronan Keating, Jedward, Louis Walsh ?,? tweeted Fergus Murphy.

?Ireland?s Sir Chris Hoy unavailable for comment,? deadpanned Irish comedian Dara O Briain, referring to Britain?s top track cyclist.

The Daily Telegraph tweeted an apology. ?She is Irish, of course,? said the newspaper, which previously has described scores of Irish athletes and entertainers, including Bono, as British.

?

Aly Raisman has an issue with her gold medals. She?s not sure which is which.

The captain of the Fierce Five, the first U.S. team since 1996 to win the women?s gymnastics title, got her second gold medal Tuesday, claiming the title on floor exercise. But in the frenzy afterward, that medal got mixed up with her team medal.

?Yesterday was so hectic,? she said, ?I forgot to mark them.?

Considering a complemental model of health and fitness ...

Abstract

This article examines the concept of fitness, which, in spite of its much avowed cultural significance, has become the subject of much critical attention. In particular, it considers the now contested relation of fitness to health; the fact that, although there appears to be a clear consensus on a simple causal relation between the two, this has been deemed illusory outside the medico-scientific context of its production. In response to the problems with both of these positions, this article examines the potential for reconfiguring the relation between fitness and health on new terms. A complemental model of health and fitness is proposed; one that strives to account for the body?s objective and subjective dimensions and for those intermediary varieties of experience that lie in between.

Demoted policeman sues over Sheen escort in DC

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A D.C. police captain who was demoted after actor Charlie Sheen received a police escort to his comedy show last year has filed a multi-million dollar whistleblower lawsuit against the department.

Hilton Burton claims he was punished for telling the D.C. Council that police escorts for celebrities were a common practice in the city, putting him at odds with Police Chief Cathy Lanier. The chief said Sheen's escort broke police protocol and that such escorts were generally reserved for government officials and dignitaries, but could be approved for others on a case-by-case basis.

"To me, it's all retaliatory because the chief did not like what I said before the city council," Burton said Wednesday.

Lanier has said the demotion was not connected to the escort or to Burton's remarks and was instead a reflection of his performance. Her spokeswoman, Gwendolyn Crump, said the department's lawyers had not yet reviewed the lawsuit and weren't available to comment.

Sheen's April 19, 2011 escort from Dulles International Airport to a concert hall attracted attention when the actor posted about it on Twitter with a photo of flashing emergency lights and a speedometer that appeared to be registering about 80 mph. Lanier at the time said the escort ran afoul of department policies, in part because emergency lights were used in a non-emergency situation and because the escort originated outside city lines. She also said the escort wasn't given the proper approval within the department.

The escort was provided after one of Sheen's representatives, concerned the actor would be running late from Los Angeles for his performance, contacted police and requested a ride to the concert hall. Two off-duty officers met Sheen at the airport and drove him to the venue. The promoter reimbursed the city for eight hours of overtime, at a cost of $445, police said.

Burton testified before the council two months later that escorts for celebrities were routinely provided and that there was no written rule against them. Other celebrities who have received police escorts in the last few years include Bill Gates, Jay-Z and Washington Wizards star John Wall, according to police records obtained by The Associated Press.

An inspector general's report concluded that the officers who provided the escort didn't break department rules and said that escorts for non-dignitaries were routinely provided. The report faulted the department for failing to establish and follow clear guidelines about the rides and said the casual manner in which they were handled opened the police force to liability if something went wrong.

Burton was later transferred out of the special operations division, which he led, and demoted two ranks from commander to captain. He was first transferred to the department's medical services branch, where according to the lawsuit he had "no real duties," and is now involved in internal affairs investigations for the fire department.

The police department, the suit alleges, "has demonstrated extreme, outrageous, and intolerable conduct that is beyond all bounds of decency."

Besides seeking at least $6 million in punitive and compensatory damages, the suit also seeks for Burton to be reinstated to commander and to his prior position with the special operations division.

Burton has previously filed discrimination complaints against the department and even before the Sheen escort, had sued Lanier, accusing her of wrongfully demoting him.

He has said his superiors told him he was being demoted from special operations commander because of his performance, but his lawyer said Wednesday it won't be easy for the department to prove that in court because his superiors didn't raise problems about his performance until after he had appeared before the D.C. Council.

August 6, 2012 | The 2012 Summer Olympics | TV Club | TV | The ...

Although the summer Olympics have much to offer?the breathless aerials of the uneven bars, the ever-present risk in a perfectly tucked dive, the primal satisfaction of just watching people run really, really fast?deep down I?ve always been a Winter Olympics kind of a girl. Not for some sensible reason, like I dabbled in curling as a child, or was raised in remote Western Canada. Basically it boils down to Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan.

The year was 1994 and Harding allegedly had two goons assault Kerrigan with a collapsable police baton to keep her out of the competition (the details are explored in the glorious made-for-TV movie Tony And Nancy: The Inside Story). The scandal that led up to the figure skating competition that year, for better or worse, provided a narrative through line for the first Olympic games I was really conscious of. Initially sucked in by the salacious and bizarre I became an avid fan of the sport itself (I even picked up figure skating but never graduated beyond a single Axel). But as the games went on I never lost the hunger for more stories about the strong, beautiful women on the ice, and NBC did not disappoint. I stared wide-eyed and slack-jawed as they linked Surya Bonaly?s rebellious, ballsy backflip with the insane story of her adoptive French parents finding her in a bush somewhere in Sierra Leone,? the painting of Katarina Witt as comeback kid back on the ice for the first time since 1988, the revelation of Oksana Baiul both as overlooked, mind-blowing athlete and scrappy orphan who used to sleep on a cot at the rink where she trained.

No matter how many incredible Olympic moments have come and gone since then, that is the year I will remember most viscerally, because I was young, because it was personal, because it is basic human nature to latch on to personal stories, and that doesn?t have to obscure or diminish raw, objective skill and achievement. Is scandal and sentimentality the point of sport? No. But I?m willing to admit that when it comes to sport-as-entertainment, it doesn?t hurt. Sheer excellence in athletic performance may make winners, but the media?s penchant for storytelling turns those winners into heroes. Where other reviewers have called for more straight up sports coverage and less human interest boosters again and again over the past week, I thoroughly enjoy the assistance in seeing competitors as individuals, reflecting on their lives as Olympians, being taken out of the action for a moment to be reminded of the personal or professional stakes at hand for a particular athlete.?

The problem isn?t the existence of these backstories, but NBC?s treatment of them. When sharing biographical details in the midst of competition, the commentators seem to have a hard time keeping it brief, so that it?s not distracting. When delivered in a prepared video, the quality comes off as a little cheesy, a little canned, a little bit like the confessional booth on The Real World. There is a real opportunity, and effort, to weave together a show that is intentionally rather than detrimentally made up of multiple elements, but it?s just not quite good enough to do the athletes justice. What is really unfortunate is that NBC is failing in its video content where commercials are succeeding with far less time or need. The little meet-the-athlete sidebars feel like hokey commercials with stock footage of scenic beaches or families posing on the playground, while a TD Ameritrade commercial about Jonathan Horton climbing to the ceiling of a department store as a child, or Yelena Isinbayeva learning the pole vault when her dreams of being a gymnast are dashed, are embarrassingly moving mini documentaries about the genesis of greatness.

Also embarrassing was the truncated coverage of what was by all accounts a truly thrilling women?s soccer match between the United States and Canada, the kind you spend all day getting excited about watching in primetime if you haven?t had the chance to stream it in real time. Bob Costas actually just summarized the event rather than even pretending to give it the faux-live-treatment bit?rather a slap in the face, but we all know they?re just racing over to the track and field events (pun intended). Also getting a bit of a gloss-over in the show?s opening was the male sprint in the Velodrome, but at least that event received the common courtesy of fake-live-coverage, probably in part because a young Brit, 24-year-old Jason Kenny, won the gold medal.

The explanation of sports terms and techniques seemed strangely uneven throughout the show. One minute the commentators will explain, effectively yet concisely, why the bikers in the sprint spend the first lap of the race controlling their speed until the last 200 meters (resembling nothing more than a slow motion game of chicken on wheels) or how the speed and direction of the wind can play a huge part in shaping the performance of a pole vaulter, as it did for Jen Suhr (gold), Yarisley Silva (Silver), and Isinbayeva (placing unexpectedly low at bronze) tonight. A particularly effective illustration was the Eadweard Muybridge-style distention of action used to show the range of motion during men?s diving, such that you could see each step of each rotation alongside the one before and after it, a reminder of the fact that the Olympics really exist to celebrate what a wondrous piece of work the human body is. The next minute, however, the ?casters are dropping types of jumps named after famous gymnasts of the past, or the name of the last Russian competitor to win multiple gold medals for the same category in 1970-something, references that mean nothing to Olympic outsiders unless paired with just a hint of further explanation.

The springboard preliminary was the first event given deeper coverage, and rightly so; the competition is tight and has nearly deaf American diver Chris Colwill to focus on?but it?s also terrifying. Every time the diver starts to come down from the initial ascent there?s a little flip in my stomach, my hand goes to my mouth, and I prepare to see someone?s head cracked open on the board, filling the pool with blood. I?m happy to report that despite just such an incident with Canadian diver Alexander Despatie earlier in the games, the pool remained unbloodied this time around. The equally lengthy coverage of men?s beach volleyball initially seemed irksome?perhaps this is unfair, but it?s hard for me to take seriously a sport that involves the recreation of a beach and blasts of Top 40 hits in between sets?but it ended up being a very tense game. It was easy to think of Latvia?s Martins Plavins and Janis Smedins as the underdogs from a global perspective?and their visibly smaller stature when compared to Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal?but after two close rounds their reliance on strategy paid off. They will be going up against the Brazilian team in the semi finals.

Far more distracting than the splicing in of pseudo-home-videos was the back and forth between multiple track and field events. Perhaps the show?s producers thought the cross-cutting would create a sense of energy, but instead the constant return to the most depressing pole vault of all time after brief looks at races of various lengths felt like that tiresome, excruciating cut back to the falling truck in Inception. Since all of the action has in fact been, say it with me now, RECORDED EARLIER we are left to conclude that the hectic, sloppy toggling is a choice rather than a necessity. Despite this treatment, however, there were some really emotional moments, such as Felix Sanchez holding the photo of his grandmother crossing the finish line, and great underdog wins, such as that of Kirani James, the first athlete to ever win a medal for Grenada. The Caribbean athletes generally killed it, delivering winners from Jamaica, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and of course good old Grenada. The idea of returning to the country that once colonized yours, and eking out some kind of victory on their turf, must be satisfying.

The climax of the program tonight was unequivocally (and unsurprisingly) the gymnastics. Gabby Douglas, quickly shaping up to be this year?s Dorothy Hamill, gave a few thrillingly high leaps on the uneven bars but the competition was just so fierce a small mistake left her in last place. While reports of her constant, not-sweating-it smiles are highly exaggerated, she did seem a bit off from the get-go tonight, noticeably feeling the pressure of either her spectacularly lauded earlier win, or having to go last after seeing one flawless routine after another? or both. In the men?s still rings, however, a sport that requires a nearly inconceivable amount of strength and control hidden by aerial grace, it was a veteran rather than a newbie I found myself rooting for in Jordan Jovtchev. Like the Susan Lucci of the Olympics, this guy has competed in six different games, not to mention built a gym in his home country of Bulgaria, and never won a single lousy gold medal. Always a bridesmaid, never a bride. Not only was Jovtchev bumped down by a slew of younger athletes, the near perfect performance from sassily winking Chen Yibing was pushed to silver after the, in my mind, slightly less perfect showing from Arthur Zanetti of Brazil. Zanetti was the very last to perform and when his score was announced, there was an audible gasp from the audience. The drama of that moment held up despite its several hour delay in being delivered to American primetime.

Despite my preference for context, there was one video interjection I haven?t quite been able to wrap my mind around and would love to see debated in the comments if only because it might sway me one way or the other. Mary Carillo?s explanation of how England is the birthplace of the chronometer and longitudinal space and time; does it add value to the proceedings, or distract us with unnecessary, at times even goofy information? Of course, the same question could be asked of NBC?s approach to the coverage in general.

Stray observations:

  • The opening credo tonight seems painfully obvious: ?They compete to win, but sometimes they represent something more.? Like, for example, their country? Yeah, we got that.
  • It?s pretty adorable that the sprint bikers basically have to be held up by their coaches until that buzzer goes.
  • Apparently when it comes to diving, the louder the better. The louder the board creaks, the deeper it is depressed, and higher the diver?s initial leap will be.
  • Chinese diver Qin Kai is described as a ?veteran at 26?. This reminder of the limitations on life as an athlete strikes me as profoundly sad.
  • At the one point the commenter says that runner Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce from Jamaica has ?a smile that belies an inner strength.? What does that even mean? That ladies who smile are generally weak? Then why the fixation with Gabby Douglas? pearly whites?
  • Tom?s Gonz?lez of Chile is a total vaulting hipster, complete with gotta-be-ironic pervert ?stache and eyebrow ring.

Made in South Florida

When people think about South Florida?s economy, what usually come to mind are tourism, retail businesses, housing and construction and international trade.

Manufacturing? Uh, uh. Big companies producing airplanes, trains, autos, jet engines, pharmaceuticals, oil products, steel and processed foods ? they?re somewhere else.

In reality, South Florida is home to a wide array of manufacturing operations. Small, family-owned businesses with fewer than 25 employees make up the largest share by far. There are also many mid-sized firms and some large companies with more than a thousand employees, such as Beckman Coulter, Sikorsky and United States Sugar. Manufacturers in the tri-county area produce biomedical products, pharmaceuticals, avionics, machined parts, cosmetics, food products, packaging, aerospace components, boats and helicopters. They include names such as Goya Foods, Coca-Cola Bottling, Badia Spices, Cemex, United Pillow Manufacturing, Noven Pharmaceuticals, Mako Surgical and J.M. Smucker.

For sure, the country?s biggest manufacturing centers are not in the tri-county area, or in the state. And some sizable manufacturers with a presence in South Florida ? like Boston Scientific, Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne and Motorola ? have had big layoffs over the years. In Miami-Dade, the sector has lost nearly half its jobs since 2000; Broward shed about 30 percent.

Yet, companies are beginning to expand again.

Japanese-owned Nipro Diagnostics, maker of low-cost blood glucose meters and other devices, has been on a hiring spree, adding 58 jobs in its Fort Lauderdale plant in the past year. GE Aviation recently invested $20 million to expand its electrical power-conversion facility in Pompano Beach. Drinkable Air opened a plant to make atmospheric water generators in Lauderdale Lakes.

Aerospace Technologies, which makes window shades for commercial and corporate aircraft, opened a new headquarters in Boca Raton. Diamante Industries invested in a Miami facility to manufacture single-crystal synthetic diamonds. And Goya Foods last year invested $44 million in a new distribution center near Doral to ship products made in Miami to the Caribbean, Latin America and Africa.

?Manufacturing is a small but important sector for our economy,? said Tom Kennedy, president and CEO of the Fort Lauderdale-based South Florida Manufacturers Association. ?It is not a legacy sector like tourism, agriculture or development, but it?s in the next tier, producing economic stability in the state and countering many of the cycles affecting other parts of the economy.?

According to the association?s estimates, there are about 5,000 to 6,000 manufacturers in South Florida, of which 95 percent have 10 employees or fewer. Statewide, it?s estimated that there are more than 300,000 jobs in manufacturing out of a total workforce of about 7.1 million. Enterprise Florida puts the number of manufacturers statewide at 17,000.

In Miami-Dade County, there were about 2,600 manufacturing companies as of the fourth quarter of 2011, said Jaap Donath, vice president of research and strategic planning at the Beacon Council, a Miami-based private-public partnership that promotes economic development in Miami-Dade. These companies had about 35,500 employees as of May 2012, out of a total of around one million, he added.

Why Nice People Cling to Bad Boys (or Girls) | Psychology Today

You don?t consider yourself clingy, but you find yourself obsessing too much about the relationship. You ask yourself: ?Why am I doing this???

You married a really solid guy and now a few years later, he?s always complaining and it feels tiresome.?You ask yourself: ?Why is he acting like such a baby???

Intimacy?is a gift and a curse. It is the way of things. When intimacy works, we?re in bliss. Love opens the door for real happiness.?

Yet, over time, intimacy also opens us up to our wounds, our pains and our fears. For some it?s angry intimacy, for others it?s co-dependent intimacy, etc. Here, we will return to a discussion of neediness. It?s destructive and there?s a lot you can do about it.?

Nature vs. Nurture: We all have psychological wounds from early life, some more and some less. For some, it can be because of a reactive nature. You experienced more hurt or rejection because you were wired to react more than others and developed a narrative of damage.

Or, you may have had an environmentally imposed injury; your father was abusive or unavailable, your mother was depressed or your older sister was favored and you were second best.? Most often the wounds from childhood are a combination of nature and nurture.?

Then, you go through life having sealed over these wounds. Human beings are remarkably adaptive. You go to college, get a job, date without problems and then you fall in love and enter a truly intimate relationship.?

Here?s the rub: With true intimacy, you?ve in touch with love, and yet, the door to these early wounds open up.?

?I obsess too much about my boyfriend. I can?t help it.??

Deep in your soul, if you feel second best in some way, you?ll worry that he or she will leave you.?That is the start of the obsessive life of clingy intimacy.?

It Starts with Falling in Love: In The Narcissistic Ex series we described the narcissistic personality, which can be found in both men and women. Whether it is an egotistical preoccupation with self, success, aspirations, desires, and how others perceive one?these can all fall under the category of a narcissistic being. While such people can be compelling, they are a terrible match for someone who is clingy.?

Dependency can fuel and intense romantic link because egoists love to be desired and crave admiration, while the clingy partner supplies that need. It all feels magically grand and urgent.? After all, ?this relationship is so unique and powerful.?

Here?s the problem: Clingy lovers are insecure, but it's often latent and they?re not aware of it.

If you?re a well-adjusted adult you?ve probably covered up the hurts of childhood quite well. So, intimacy with a brilliant, but arrogant partner can hit you hard.?Over time this wonderful love affair can trigger your worst fears, because if your beloved has some of these problems, you may be involved with someone who can?t really love you.?

The narcissist loves being in love.?They are not in love with you, but in love with being in love with you. This is a crucial point. You may love him, and feel loved, but the drama of this love may not have the depth that you require. And, once embedded in the field of intimacy, you feel trapped ? and anxious.?

And, he or she may just feel annoyed.

The relationship between a narcissist and someone with latent neediness may initially thrive. Often a romantic, he'll shower his partner with love and compliments - and she'll respond in kind. The sex and intimacy can be amazing. Quickly, their relationship will blossom into a whirlwind romance; and love is blind.

Yet, before you know it, things become unbalanced as our hypothetical egoist begins to lose interest and the needy partner yearns for more. He?ll criticize, she?ll obsess and he?ll imagine a better love elsewhere. The intimacy will fizzle and slowly begin to disappear. This results in a lot more clinginess.?

Example:?? Samantha, a woman in her mid 20s, with less than conscious abandonment issues. She was brought up by her mother, and has only faint memories of her father who left the family when she was in grade school. Samantha began to display clingy elements early on in her childhood. She had strong fears of being left alone.?

Through her teens, these fears abated, and Samantha matured nicely into adulthood unencumbered (at least she thought) by her wounds.

Samantha met Thomas at an art gallery. She was drawn to his charisma and ability to shine in the room, let alone his good looks. He also found Samantha attractive and asked her out for drinks that evening. They hit it off and became fast lovers.

At a glance, their relationship was like a fairy tale. Samantha and Thomas were infatuated and only had eyes for each other. The sex was phenomenal and they clicked on an intimate level.?

Yet, before the pair realized it, their relationship began to deteriorate.

Thomas? arrogance and selfishness began to trigger Samantha?s latent abandonment issues. He spent less time at home and more time at work and with friends. Samantha?s self-esteem and trust began to plummet, as she began to blame herself for their crumbling relationship.?

?I obsess too much about my boyfriend. I can?t help it.?

Samantha began to feel unattractive and sought reassurance that everything was fine. Thomas reassured; but was annoyed. Soon, Samantha began to grow suspicious of Thomas? behavior. The sex was no longer phenomenal and their intimacy had become a one-way street, with Samantha clinging on (no pun intended) to their relationship?because she believed she couldn?t live without him.?

From the Couch:? This relationship is destructive?for Samantha. Given her struggle with dependency, Samantha really needs a stable and available man. Many women pick unavailable and dynamic types like Thomas in order to unconsciously solve the wounds of childhood. It fails.?

While most people with self centered traits are not out and out narcissists, people like Thomas are compelling lovers, and often bad partners. Samantha is probably best off getting into a good therapy and reconsidering this relationship. She has a vulnerability that mixes very poorly with a self centered lover.?

Yes, narcissists can be deceiving. They are great at being in love. But, they are not, by and large, in love with you. They are in love with the wonderful high of being in love; and a needy, worshipping lover can work just fine.

Here is the good news: If you step up and deal with your clinginess, there?s a chance for the relationship. ?This will be dependent on whether or not your partner has deep psychological issues - or just has some normal selfish traits.

Great Britain win historic dressage team gold

Great Britain celebrated their first dressage medal in Olympic history with gold in the team event at Greenwich Park on Tuesday, taking the host nation's gold total to a record 20.

A century of disappointment at this exalted level came to a glorious end for the London 2012 hosts courtesy of Carl Hester, Charlotte Dujardin and Laura Bechtolsheimer.

The triumphant trio followed up Britain's show jumping team gold 24 hours earlier with a score of 79.979 to defeat dressage masters Germany, who took silver on 78.216.

The Netherlands, on 77.124, revised down slightly after an initial total of 77.127, came in third.

Britain went into this final round with a slender lead over Germany, who were seeking their ninth consecutive Olympic title.

And with Princess Anne, who competed at the 1976 Montreal Games, in the crowd, the home team were set on their way by a superb opening test from Hester - who posted a new Olympic Grand Prix Special record riding Uthopia.

Bechtolsheimer, on Mistral Hojris, kept the momentum rolling with Olympic debutant Dujardin sealing victory on Valegro and lowering the freshly established Olympic record set a few minutes earlier in the process.

Hester, appearing at his fourth Olympics, said: "I know it is an old cliche, but this is the culmination of many years of dreaming about it and it finally happening.

"Both those girls (Dujardin and Bechtolsheimer) are cool customers.

"Charlotte was unbelievable. The horse (Valegro) was also unbelievable, he's the best horse in the world."

He added: "I told Charlotte on the way down here that some people wish it would happen, some people think it will happen, and you're going to make it happen.

"She just goes in and does it like the true professional she is and like most of the athletes who have won gold for Britain. It has shot our sport into a totally different league."

Dujardin could be celebrating further gold on Thursday in the individual dressage, for which the inexperienced but brilliant 27-year-old will start hot favourite.

She praised Valegro, describing him as "a once-in-a-lifetime horse."

And on scoring higher than her mentor, Hester, she added: "I always love beating him. We will be competing again in the freestyle and I will beat him again!"

Up to this remarkable turnaround in their fortunes, the mysterious world of dressage based on cavalry training techniques developed in Europe in the Middle Ages had eluded Britain.

Equine ballet, as it has been described, involves the top hat and tailed rider instructing the horse with barely perceptable movements to demonstrate obedience, relaxation and agility.

Among the moves are piaffe, where the horse appears to be dancing on the spot, and half-pass, a trot diagonally across the arena.

Each routine, set to music, lasts around six minutes and is assessed by eagle-eyed judges sitting in wooden cabins around the arena.

Britain's best previous showing in dressage came four years ago in Beijing when they came in sixth to Germany.

Well-beaten in sixth on Tuesday came the United States, with one of their number, Jan Ebling, riding Rafalca, part-owned by Ann Romney, wife of Republican presidential hopeful Mick Romney.

Rafalca's ears were covered with an equine-style baseball cap, sporting the Stars and Stripes.

Asked if his horse's owners had turned up to watch Ebling replied: "Yes, the three amigos are in the audience. That is Mrs Romney, my wife and Beth Meyer.

"I blew them a kiss at the end as I knew where they were sitting."

The equestrian competition continues on Wednesday with Britain's Nick Skelton riding Big Star fancied to win individual show jumping gold to add to the team title he won here on Monday.

Azealia Banks Beefs With Jim Jones on Twitter

Azealia and Capo argue about the definition of ?Vamp??

Earlier today (August 6), Azealia Banks added to her list of Twitter feuds by exchanging words with fellow outspoken Harlem native Jim Jones. The topic of their friction? The correct definition of the term ?vamp.?

The dispute started when the young femcee tweeted: ?@AZEALIABANKS: VAMP: A very sexually/financially powerful woman who is usually characterized by a penchant for dark things; night, witchcraft, .. Etc.,? causing a follower to reply, ?@Rahim_theDream: @AZEALIABANKS but @JimJonesCapo already has a track called ?Vamp Life.?

Capo, who?s become synonymous with ?Vampire Life,? then added his own two cents to the conversation, tweeting back: ?@jimjonescapo: @AZEALIABANKS tht vamplife is contagious.?

This didn?t sit well with Banks, who retorted:

?@AZEALIABANKS: @jimjonescapo yea I know! I wrote 212 in 2011 before ur song tho. That vamp shit is some fashion stuff as well. In case u didn?t know.? Azealia then added more to the fire: ??@AZEALIABANKS: @jimjonescapo don?t be tryna take no credit Holmes.?

The aforementioned comments angered veteran Jim Jones, who proceeded to attempt to kick knowledge to the young ?212? rapper, tweeting; ?@jimjonescapo: @AZEALIABANKS knock it off please learn more about Harlem before u start vampin lol jokes enjoy ur day keep #vampin.?

After reading Capo?s reply, Banks began politely asking him to ?go away,? prompting the Diplomat to disobey her requests by responding, ?@jimjonescapo: @AZEALIABANKS tell ur mother to go away ub2 bit slore.?

As a parting shot, she offered: ?lol jim jones said i need to get my shoes and bags together? what kind of straight man worries about a woman?s shoes and bags??? wtf????

Azealia isn?t any stranger to Twitter beef. Just last week, Banks and Nicki Minaj exchanged words via the social media outlet and before that, she aggressively sent shots at the likes of Lil Kim, T.I., Iggy Azalea and Kreayshawn. However, the fiery rapstress could be changing her ways soon.

?I REALLY have to learn not to respond to everything?? she said after the exchange.

She might have been feeling that way for a while, as evidenced by a recent truce with Kreayshawn.

?@AZEALIABANKS: @KREAYSHAWN I apologize for coming down on you so hard earlier this year,? she tweeted recently. ?I can be really defensive sometimes. I?m just naturally rude. LMFAOO it?s a NY thing? I can?t help it.?

Kreayshawn accepted her apology, and now the two plan on working on a collaboration that also includes fellow femcee Angel Haze.?Christian Bonoan

DJ White Shadow produced the track.</P><P>Gaga has also been playing her new piano-heavy song "Princess Die" while on tour. During one stop, she opened up a bit about her next album. "Let's just say I feel, I feel that when I wrote <i>Born This Way,</i> I demonstrated a sense of maturity," she said. "And I feel that on the next album, there's a lack of maturity &#8212; it's a tremendous lack of maturity or sense of responsibility."</P><P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/photos/?fid=1617615"><img src="http://www.mtv.com/news/photos/s/spotted/banner/spotted.jpg"></a></P>

NASA investigates proton radiation effects on cells

ScienceDaily (Aug. 4, 2012) ? A team of researchers at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, Calif., has found radiation from protons could further enhance a process that occurs during tumor progression. This information may help lead to better methods to protect astronauts from the harmful effects of radiation in space, as well as help cancer researchers on Earth better understand the effects of radiation treatment on the human body.

NASA is particularly interested in this research because protons, which are charged subatomic particles, are the main source of space radiation astronauts receive during spaceflights. The study was part of NASA's ongoing effort to learn how to mitigate the effects of radiation during long-duration missions to destinations beyond low Earth orbit, such as asteroids and Mars.

"Our paper makes new discoveries on the potential risks from low doses of protons that occur outside of the tumor during radiation therapy, and to all tissues for astronauts exposed to space radiation," said Francis A. Cucinotta, chief scientist for the Human Research Program Space Radiation Program Element at Johnson and one of the authors of the paper.

The objective of the researchers was to study the biological effects of low-energy protons on epithelial cells (membranous tissues found throughout the body) and the protons' propensity to enhance a process that occurs during tumor progression. This process is called epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), which has been associated with cancer progression. EMT also has been linked to radiation-induced fibrosis, one of the most common late effects of radiotherapy.

Notably, the study revealed protons alone can induce EMT-associated changes in normal human epithelial cells. Although the total body dose received in space is moderately low compared to what is received in radiotherapy, this study reveals that low doses of protons still may prompt EMT and result in potentially detrimental effects.

These studies were conducted at Johnson and at the NASA Space Radiation Laboratory at Brookhaven National Laboratory, Upton, N.Y.

Results of the study were published as "Protons Sensitize Epithelial Cells to Mesenchymal Transition" in the July 23 issue of the journal PLoS ONE.
